My Grading System

A+ = Masterpiece (I hold back on this one.) / A = Great. / A- = Really Good. / B+ = Good. / B = Decent (Serviceable). / B- = Flawed but okay (For those times there's something redeeming about the work). / C+ = Not very good (Skip it). C = Bad. / C- = Awful. / F = Complete Disaster (I hold back on this one too).

Note on Spoilers: I will try to avoid ruining a story by going into too much detail. But if I wish to include some revealing points to my analysis I will try to remember to add a separate spoiler paragraph.

Dark Shadows (2012)

Director Tim Burton and Johnny Depp collaborate again on an adaptation of the cult television show of the same name.   The result is a mediocre comedy with moments of gold but mostly it’s a bunch of underdeveloped characters difficult to care about.  The film starts off making you believe that the story is going to be from the point of view of the new governess Victoria Winters but then it shifts and Depp’s Barnabas Collins takes over as the hero.   Depp’s Van-Winkle-vampire creation is a fun character and you can tell the actor enjoys playing him.  The problem is he’s a lousy hero to root for: he cheats on his supposed “true” love and kills people without apology.  (I get it.  He’s a vampire, he needs to drink blood and this is a comedy, true, but it doesn’t help make him a likable character to root for).   This is another bloated example of a story with too many characters and a plot without a strong hero.   It’s not all bad, there are some funny moments and Eva Green is fantastic as the revengeful love-sick witch Angelique Bouchard.   When the film ends all I could think was why in the hell would Barnabas want to be with Victoria when he could be with the much stronger and appealing Angelique instead?  Grade: C+
