If you watched this film without the sound it would
appear to be a documentary about a bunch of old retired men deciding to go into
theater. Yet it’s probably one of the most morbid and deeply disturbing films ever
made because of both how these old men talk about such horrific actions with
such nonchalant attitude and how they weirdly decide to re-enact them without
much need for forgiveness. It’s like boasting while hoping to become famous for
all the attention. What did they do? Oh they’re just the goons who
systematically slaughtered over 500,000 people supposedly connected to the
communist party. It’s as if the SS officers who ran the Nazi death camps during
WWII were allowed to peacefully live out their lives as heroes to later stage
plays on how they did what they did. It’s sickening and fascinating at the same
time. My only complaint with this film is that it’s kind of sensationalizing
these killers. Sure they’re heroes in their country but that doesn’t mean the
rest of the world should give them this opportunity to re-live their past
glories. Grade: B+
My Grading System
A+ = Masterpiece (I hold back on this one.) / A = Great. / A- = Really Good. / B+ = Good. / B = Decent (Serviceable). / B- = Flawed but okay (For those times there's something redeeming about the work). / C+ = Not very good (Skip it). C = Bad. / C- = Awful. / F = Complete Disaster (I hold back on this one too).
Note on Spoilers: I will try to avoid ruining a story by going into too much detail. But if I wish to include some revealing points to my analysis I will try to remember to add a separate spoiler paragraph.
