I’m usually a fan of Jean-Luc Godard’s work but this film is pretty
tedious and kind of a mess. There are some great moments such as the
twist of seeing the house wife go to work as a prostitute, dropping her child
off at some kind of weird daycare slum but as avant-garde films go this one
feels like it’s trying too hard to make a throng of statements, both
politically and socially. Instead of focusing on a single idea
to make a powerful message which resonates with the viewer, Godard decides to
throw everything at you. This is not the film I’d have a
Godard virgin watch and have a hard time recommending it. It’s
an experimental film that is frozen in the sixties instead of being ahead of
its time. Grade: C-
My Grading System
A+ = Masterpiece (I hold back on this one.) / A = Great. / A- = Really Good. / B+ = Good. / B = Decent (Serviceable). / B- = Flawed but okay (For those times there's something redeeming about the work). / C+ = Not very good (Skip it). C = Bad. / C- = Awful. / F = Complete Disaster (I hold back on this one too).
Note on Spoilers: I will try to avoid ruining a story by going into too much detail. But if I wish to include some revealing points to my analysis I will try to remember to add a separate spoiler paragraph.
